The brief for this Victorian house in Brighton, was to create an open plan kitchen/dining space, suitable for both family life and entertaining.
Originally, the triple aspect kitchen had plenty of lovely natural light but had tired painted cabinets and a chimney breast and beam that created an awkward division in the room. The position of one of the existing windows also meant a lack of flexibility for storage and shelving. Blocking this in allowed more wall space for open shelving. A new large window in the bottom half of the room created views to the walled garden and a beautiful backdrop for a dining nook, with bespoke banquette.
Repositioning the dining area in the corner created a clear sight line from the front of the house, to the glass sliding doors and the wall of green bamboo in the garden beyond. As soon as you come through the front door this view at the back of the house welcomes and draws you in to the home.
The peninsula provides a natural division between the cooking and dining areas and extra informal seating. Exposed oak was combined with painted cabinetry in an inky blue-black by Paint & Paper library, creating depth and contrast, with warm, natural finishes.
